Splayed Strybing, 2005 Watercolor & Archival Digital Print, 24" x 37.25"
A Chiranthofremontia vine frames the entrance of the Strybing Arboretum in San Francisco. I never take specimens from living plants without permission and gathered this bract and blossom off the ground near the base of the plant. The darker blossom and foggy ground painted in watercolor are layered with a digital image of the colorful bracts that protect the more fragile flower.
