The large, thistle-like leaves of the acanthus are the source of the stylized forms in Corinthian columns. However, it is the spike-like flower that is pictured here, its structure reminiscent of a standing figure. The lower buds split open to reveal innards, while those at the top are in colorful bloom spilling seeds.
